Sankt Johann in Tirol – Alpine Idyll in the Heart of the Kitzbühel Alps
Located in a wide, sunny valley between the majestic Wilder Kaiser massif and the Kitzbüheler Horn, Sankt Johann in Tirol is the pulsating heart of the Kitzbühel Alps. Unlike some of its more flashy neighbors, "St. Johann" (as the locals call it) retains a genuine, down-to-earth Tyrolean charm while offering world-class resort facilities.
A Glimpse of History
The town's roots date back to the 8th century, named after a church dedicated to St. John the Evangelist. Its "golden age" came in the 1540s, however, when copper and silver mining transformed the sleepy settlement into a wealthy hub. You can still see this legacy today in the town's stately architecture.
The town centre is dominated by the twin-towered Baroque deanery church, one of the largest and most beautiful in the Tyrolean lowlands, with stunning 18th-century frescoes.
